Tell me about a time when you were looking for a job....

How did you feel?

Job offer for undergraduate was the best thing ever. Knew he would make a living

Recent job search did not have a sense of urgency. Knew he wanted something different but was not pushed to do something quickly because he was comfortable with prior role. Every other month he was doing a set of job applications, which he balanced with his job and becoming a new father.
What were your stressors?

Experience some stress from being laid off from 1st role, but used connected with alma to volunteer coach baseball. This opportunity allowed him to network and find another full-time role at a small company.

Some interviews were very long. For example, one company had a 2.5 month interview process where he met a third of the team and did not receive an offer. During that time he met 6 people on the team, the hiring manager and a few SVPs.

Ghosted by several companies, applicant portal only shows application received

This current role is the first major job transition he has experienced. It felt like taking a leap of faith and going into the unknown. The other job was fully in-person. Now, he is in a distributed model makes learning the role and connecting with others a little different. For example, he asked himself, "How do I get trained and fully onboarded in the virtual realm?"

Introverted, processor, observer so feels on the spot. Placing himself in comparison to others makes him a little nervous. How would it be interpreted.
What excited you about the process?

Senior year of undergraduate experience he had a job offer before graduation, however was laid off later due to 2008 recession. The process occurred over a day. He was able to tour the company, interview and receive an offer in a condense timeline.

Current company was more a two-week process

Knew he did not want to stay at his current company because he wanted more resources and opportunities. Did not want the same job for the next 30 years.

Realized that there were other things out there at larger companies that interested him

Liked the idea of learning, benefits, work/life balance
How would you help a friend find a job?

Figure out what you really want to do. What excites you about the work you do. There are so many job opportunities

Find companies that are attractive to you. Size, culture, etc.

Do not be afraid to put yourself out there. Rejection is a part of the game. You will find something eventually. Think of it as a conversation to relieve some of the stress. You are interviewing them just as much as they are you
Additional Information

5 years experience in Operations, followed up with switched to Human Resources (7yrs experience as a leader), where he developed and managed others. He felt this role was more focused on others and he desired an opportunity to further his own career development.

Searched for a year looking at other HR Director roles. However, he wasn’t as successful at landing many interviews. Due to it being a passive search process he had an opportunity to reflect on what he truly desired and the type opportunity that would give him that experience. He decided to retool and focus more on individual contributor roles that would allow him to use his HR skills and deepen his proficiency. Once he found the HRBP job title he was able to leverage his skills to find a better fit, which increased his interviewing up to 50%.
